H-8 is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme cycloheximide. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and cell division in a variety of cells, including cardiac, tubule cells, and spermatozoa. H-8 is an agonist of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor. This compound has been shown to increase levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid in both rat brains and mouse brains. H-8 also stimulates protein synthesis by increasing intracellular cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
