1,4-Di(4-pyridyl)benzene (1,4-DPB) is a supramolecular compound that is able to form hydrogen bonds with the mitochondrial matrix. It inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species and prevents the oxidation of lipids in mitochondria. 1,4-DPB has been shown to inhibit the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in mitochondria during ischemia reperfusion injury. This chemical also has potent inhibitory activities against bacterial growth and can be used for treating bacterial infections. 1,4-DPB has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
