4-Nitro-1,3-benzoxazole is a nitroheterocycle that is used as a substrate for the analysis of vacuolar ATPases. It has been shown to transport basic amino acids in specific tissues and to function as an electron carrier. 4-Nitro-1,3-benzoxazole also stimulates the transport of protons across membranes and may play a role in ATP synthesis by mitochondria. The postulated mechanism is that 4-nitro-1,3-benzoxazole binds to plasma membrane proteins and causes conformational changes in the protein structure which facilitates the release of ATPase from the membrane. This allows for increased proton transport through the membrane due to 4-nitro-1,3-benzoxazole's ability to bind with both water molecules and hydrophobic domains on the plasma membrane protein.
