Hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride (RuCl3) is a redox-active, high-valent ruthenium compound that is used as an electrochemical probe in the study of electron transfer reactions. The compound has been utilized in a number of research applications including the detection of dopamine and other organic compounds, as well as glucose monitoring. Hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride has also been used in analytical chemistry to model systems involving electron transfer reactions. This compound is highly resistant to oxidation and reduction and can be detected at concentrations as low as 1 µM by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
