Furaneol is a furanic compound that is found in plants such as inulin and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. It has been shown to be an activated C-H bond, and it can be used as a homogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of hydroxyl groups. Furaneol also has the ability to dehydrate, with hydrogen chloride acting as the dehydrating agent. Furaneol can then be used as a biofuel and recycled to form 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Furaneol can also be converted into furfural by using hydrogen sulfate or hydrogen chloride.
