4-Heptyloxyaniline is a colorless liquid with an amine odor. It is soluble in water, alcohols, and ethers. 4-Heptyloxyaniline is used as a solvent and a chemical intermediate. 4-Heptyloxyaniline can be prepared by the reaction of acetylene with ethylene oxide followed by hydrolysis. The molecule has two functional groups: amines and hydroxyl groups. The amines are hydrophobic while the hydroxyl groups are hydrophilic, and thus this molecule has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. This means it can dissolve both water-soluble and oil-soluble substances.
