Tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)amine is a ligand that binds to copper. It forms a complex that is used in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and dyes. The reaction mechanism for the formation of this ligand involves the oxidation of picolinic acid by an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide. The nitrogen atoms in this compound form three bonds with copper ions, which are coordinated in a pyramidal geometry with apical nitrogen atoms. This coordination geometry can be observed in the crystal structures obtained from x-ray diffraction studies. Tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)amine has been shown to have some useful properties as a catalyst for oxidation reactions.
