5-Bromo-2-hydroxypyrimidine is a methylated pyrimidine that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It undergoes tautomeric equilibration, which is a reversible chemical reaction that can be induced by changes in pH or temperature. 5-Bromo-2-hydroxypyrimidine has been isolated from the hydroxide solution and sodium hydroxide solution as the tautomeric form. The frequency of this compound's infrared absorption band has been found to shift from 3400 cm-1 to 3300 cm-1 when it is hydrated. 5-Bromo-2-hydroxypyrimidine interacts with cytosine deaminase and forms uracil, which is an intermediate in RNA synthesis.
