Descrizione:Insulin is a peptide hormone that regulates the uptake and storage of glucose by muscle and fat cells. Insulin is produced by beta cells in the pancreas, which release it into the bloodstream when blood sugar levels rise. Insulin lowers glucose levels by increasing the amount of glucose taken up from the blood into muscle and fat cells, suppressing hepatic gluconeogenesis, and promoting glycolysis. It also increases protein synthesis, decreases proteolysis, and stimulates growth. With a molecular weight of 5808 Da, insulin is composed of two polypeptide chains with an approximate molecular weight of 3120 Da each linked by disulfide bonds. Insulin has no lipid moiety or carbohydrate moiety.Insulin binds to its receptor on the surface of a cell to trigger one or more signaling cascades leading to changes in metabolism. Binding to the receptor triggers a conformational change in the receptor that causes insulin to be released from its binding site on the receptor.
