It is a member of the phosphofructokinase family that consists of enzymes that catalyze the conversion of D-fructose 6-phosphate to D-fructose 1,6-bisphosphate in glycolysis. This enzyme is also a receptor for peptides and an activator of ion channels. The protein has been shown to be involved in the regulation of Ligand gated ion channels such as nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.
