Trans-4-cyanocyclohexanecarboxylic acid is a synthetic compound that can be used as a fungicide. It inhibits microbial growth by catalytic reduction of the chloride ion to produce hydrogen gas and inorganic phosphate. Trans-4-cyanocyclohexanecarboxylic acid is also an efficient method for producing amide from phenylpropionic acid and hydrochloric acid. This product can be used as an organic solvent, but it is toxic to microbial cells. Trans-4-cyanocyclohexanecarboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of Corynebacterium species and other bacteria, including chromobacterium species.
