Lutetium is a rare earth metal that can be found in the environment as the result of industrial processes and radioactive decay. Lutetium chloride hexahydrate is a diagnostic agent used to measure bone cancer. It is administered intravenously and detected with a gamma camera. Lutetium has been shown to be effective against various cancers, including prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancers. The lutetium inhibits tumor growth by binding to light-chain kinase enzymes on the surface of cells which regulate cell proliferation. Lutetium also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which makes it an attractive therapeutic agent for treating cancer.
