Methyl 2-(2-(benzyloxy)phenyl)acetate is a reactant that can be used to enhance the buffering capacity of an aqueous solution. It also reacts with esters, including propionic acid and butyrate, to produce ester hydrolysis products. Methyl 2-(2-(benzyloxy)phenyl)acetate has been shown to catalyze the hydrolysis of lactones in the presence of base catalysis or anchimeric assistance. This product is analogous to 2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid and may be used as a substitute for it in chemical reactions.
