4-Chloro-5-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one is a non-steroidal compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. This molecule was found in a screen of natural products and has been shown to inhibit the COX-2 enzyme. The structure of 4-chloro-5-hydroxyfuran-2(5H)-one is similar to that of furan, which is known for having an antiinflammatory effect. In addition, this compound has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of Cox 2. The structure activity relationship (SAR) between these two molecules may be due to their similarity in structure.
