2-(Hydroxymethyl)-5-methyl-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-dione (HMCD) is a compound that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. It has been shown to inhibit squamous cell carcinoma cells and induce apoptosis in vitro. HMCD interacts with hydrogen bonds on the enzyme cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2). This interaction inhibits the cPLA2 enzymes from releasing arachidonic acid from the cell membrane. The release of arachidonic acid leads to an increase in prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are involved in inflammatory reactions. HMCD also binds to IL-2 receptors and prevents the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). HMCD is water soluble and can be used as a model system for wastewater treatment. It can also be used as a substrate for Michaelis-Menten kinetics.
