(S)-(-)-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-Octahydro-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol is a ligand that forms a copper complex with the molecule. It has been used in synthesizing anilines and aldehydes by alkylation. The reaction mechanism of this process is unsymmetrical because the two molecules are not identical. The isolated yield of this ligand is typically low. (S)-(-)-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-Octahydro-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol can be obtained by hydrogenating imine chloride or hydrogenations of an unsymmetrical ketone.
