Spindlactone B is a synthetase that belongs to the class of proteins with a flavin-containing domain. It is a substrate for hydrochloric acid and has been shown to be an essential component of the spl-b complex in yeast, which is involved in the whole-body response to depression. Spindlactone B has also been shown to inhibit viral replication in vitro and in vivo. This activity may be due to inhibition of virus-induced cell lysis or inhibition of viral RNA synthesis, DNA synthesis, or protein synthesis. Spindlactone B also inhibits Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and cytomegalovirus (CMV) replication. The mechanism of action appears to involve selective suppression of EBV early gene expression by inhibiting host transcriptional activities at the level of RNA polymerase II binding.
