Sec-Butyl methanesulfonate is an alkylating agent that can cause genotoxic effects in mammalian cells. This chemical has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis and induce micronucleus formation in hamster V79 cells, which may be due to its ability to react with sulfonic acids and peroxides. Sec-Butyl methanesulfonate has also been shown to have a genotoxic potential. It can cause DNA damage by binding to the guanine bases through alkylation or base excision repair mechanisms.
