2-Hydroxy-5-methylpyridine is a carbonyl compound that contains two hydroxide groups and one oxygen atom. It is also a nucleophilic compound, which means it has an electron pair that can be donated to form a covalent bond with another atom or molecule. The compound has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in mice by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. 2-Hydoxy-5-methylpyridine has been shown to act as an x-ray contrast agent for the detection of cancerous tissue in mice. The drug was found to bind tightly to DNA, allowing for the visualization of tumours in vivo by x-ray crystallography.
