4-Methylnonane is an organic compound that is a colorless liquid. It has a boiling point of -11.8 degrees Celsius and is soluble in water, acetone, alcohol, and ether. 4-Methylnonane can be used as a solvent or as a reactant to produce other chemicals. The reaction rate of this chemical with ethane to produce 2-methylbutane is higher than the reaction rate of pentane at the same temperature. The kinetic data for 4-methylnonane are given in Table 1. This compound is also used in chromatographic science to separate compounds by viscosity and flow rate. 4-Methylnonane has been shown to have acid catalyst properties and can be used bifunctionally, as both an acid and a base catalyst for reactions involving carboxylic acids or amines with alcohols or phenols respectively.
