3-Methyl-4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one is a chalcone with the molecular formula of C14H14O. It has a melting point of 162°C and an acidic pH of 2.0. The compound can be synthesized by reacting acetophenone with benzaldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide. 3MPB is used as a precursor to other chalcones, such as 3,4,5,6-tetrahydroxychalcone and 3,4,5,6-trihydroxychalcone. Impurities of this compound include methyl ethyl ketone and the reduction products formaldehyde and formic acid. Oxime derivatives can also be formed during synthesis from reactions with hydroxylamine hydrochloride or nitrous acid.
