1-Pyrenebutanol is a fluorescent probe that can be used for the detection of hydroxyl groups in living cells. It has been shown to have a high sensitivity, as well as a high degree of selectivity. 1-Pyrenebutanol has been used to detect the presence of biphenyls in human liver and lung samples. The metabolic rate of cells has been found to increase with the addition of this probe, which may be due to its ability to activate ATPase, an enzyme that controls the flow of energy in cells. This probe also binds to dna duplexes and chromatographic peaks, acting as a catalyst for light emission.
