6-Methyl-benzofuran-3-yl)-acetic acid is a fluorescent probe that has been shown to have high selectivity for nucleophilic sites. It is a linear molecule with a dipole, photophysical properties and molecular electrostatic potential. The fluorescence of 6-methylbenzofuran-3-yl)-acetic acid has been shown to be red shifted in the presence of nucleophiles and is an excellent probe for the detection of thiols in proteins. This compound has been used as a pharmacophore for designing drugs against HIV protease.
