1-(4-Bromobenzyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (BBTZ) is an inhibitor drug that is used to block the activity of aromatase. It has been shown to inhibit the production of estradiol and estrone by binding to the active site of aromatase and blocking the uptake of substrate. This agent also inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 family members that are involved in drug metabolism. The uptake and kinetics of BBTZ have been studied in vitro using human breast cancer cells as a model system. BBTZ has been shown to be a potent inhibitor against cancer cells with low levels of aromatase expression. Radiochemical studies have shown that BBTZ can be used as a positron emission or radiotracer for positron emission tomography (PET).
