Methyl 4,4,4-trichlorobutanoate is an enantioselective synthetic reagent that can be used for the asymmetric synthesis of optically pure hydroxy and enantiomerically pure acid moieties. This reagent has been shown to be effective in the allylation of alkynyl moieties and pseudopeptides. Methyl 4,4,4-trichlorobutanoate has also been used in microbial natural product synthesis to produce a number of stereocentres. The high optical purity of this compound makes it suitable for use in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.
