N,N,N'-Triphenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (TPP) is a fluorophore that can be used in fluorescence probes for metal ions. These probes have been used for the detection of metal ions in industrial processes and are often homochiral. TPP is a helical molecule with an unsolvated electron cloud around the central phenyl ring. This molecule has strong enhancement properties and is able to emit light at a wavelength that is different than its excitation wavelength when it is excited by an external energy source. The fluorescence properties of TPP are also affected by the presence of boron nitride or other halides.
