2,3-Dichlorobenzamidine is an inhibitor of the enzyme catecholamine o-methyl transferase (COMT). COMT is responsible for the breakdown of catecholamines, including epinephrine and norepinephrine. 2,3-Dichlorobenzamidine has been shown to inhibit the activity of COMT in human subjects. 2,3-Dichlorobenzamidine can also be used as a selective inhibitor of phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PNMT), which catalyzes the conversion of norepinephrine to epinephrine. This inhibition leads to increased levels of catecholamines such as epinephrine and norepinephrine in the body. 2,3-Dichlorobenzamidine is reversible and does not lead to permanent inhibition of these enzymes.
