3-Methyl-4-nitrobenzene-1,2-diamine is a nitro compound that has been shown to be genotoxic. It has been shown to induce DNA damage in lung cells and produce protein adducts in rat liver microsomes. 3-Methyl-4-nitrobenzene-1,2-diamine has also been shown to inhibit bacterial growth and promote covalent binding with DNA. 3MDBD is used as a chemical ionization reagent in gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for the analysis of DNA. This chemical is metabolized by oxidation of the methyl group, leading to formation of the corresponding phenol and amine metabolites. 3MDBD can be detected in urine samples by mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry methods.
