Informazioni sul prodotto
Nevirapine is an antiretroviral drug that belongs to the class of nucleoside analogues. It is used as a component of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of HIV infection. Nevirapine inhibits viral replication by interfering with reverse transcription, which is an essential step in the production of new viruses. Nevirapine has been shown to be effective in preventing HIV-1 transmission from mother to child and can be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. A baseline level of nevirapine should be established before beginning HAART and monitored periodically thereafter because nevirapine can cause significant decreases in CD4 count when used alone or with other antiretroviral drugs. Drug interactions with nevirapine include efavirenz, which has been shown to increase plasma levels of nevirapine. This drug also has a low therapeutic index and should not be administered to patients suffering from severe liver disease
