Harman hydrochloride is a chemical pesticide that functions by binding to the benzodiazepine receptors on the surface of fungi, inhibiting the enzyme catalysis and leading to cell death. Harman hydrochloride also has antioxidative properties that prevent oxidative damage by free radicals. This chemical has been shown to have anticancer activity in human cells, but not in rodent cells. Harman hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against viruses such as HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), as well as bacteria like trichoderma, which can cause rot on apples.
