Levetimide is a benzetimide that blocks the action of acetylcholine by binding to the acetylcholine receptors. It has been shown to be effective in reducing pain in animal models. Levetimide binds to the cholinergic receptor, preventing it from responding to acetylcholine and causing paralysis of muscles. Benzetimides are also used as an antidote for organophosphate poisoning because they inhibit acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine. Levetimide is also used as an adjunct therapy for bone cancer and may work through its interaction with calcium ions or by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis.
