4-Iodo-benzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester is a potent inhibitor of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), which prevents the activation of the enzyme. This compound is an arylacetylene derivative that was synthesized and structurally characterized by annulation reactions. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of uPA selectively, with no effect on other proteases. 4-Iodo-benzo[b]thiophene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester also inhibits the activation of plasminogen activator and urokinase type plasminogen activator in vitro, as well as in vivo.
