1,4-Dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethyl-anthraquinone (DHQ) is a synthetic drug that inhibits the DNA gyrase enzyme. It acts as a hybridization agent and has been shown to be effective against staphylococcus bacteria. DHQ has also been shown to induce autophagy in mammalian cells, which may lead to an increased ability to eliminate cancerous cells. This drug only affects colorectal carcinoma cells and does not affect healthy cells. It is also known to have antibacterial activity against other bacteria such as rubiaceae, but does not inhibit tumor growth in animals or humans. The chemical structures of DHQ are similar to those of alizarin, which is found in plants like madder and alkanet.
