3-Amino-5-(methylthio)pyrazole-4-carbonitrile is a nitrous amine that is used as an antiviral agent, inhibiting the replication of the herpes simplex virus and other DNA viruses. It blocks viral protein synthesis by binding to cellular proteins containing nucleophilic amino acids. 3-Amino-5-(methylthio)pyrazole-4-carbonitrile has been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus type 2 and herpes simplex virus type 1 in cell culture and animal models. The drug has also been shown to inhibit viral replication of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3 in cell culture. Other studies have shown that this compound does not cause cell death or toxicity in nonviral cells, which makes it a potential candidate for use as an antiviral drug without toxic side effects.
