(E)-Cefuroxime-d3 axetil is a cephalosporin that has been modified to contain a deuterium atom at the 3 position of the hydroxyl group. The drug has been shown to have an affinity for the IL-2 receptor and to inhibit the activity of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as indomethacin. It is also active against streptococcal pharyngitis and other infections caused by bacteria, including infectious diseases such as pneumonia. (E)-Cefuroxime-d3 axetil is an oral prodrug that is converted into cefuroxime after absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. It has an increased half-life compared with cefuroxime, which may be due to its enzymatic inactivation or metabolic conversion by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
