(S)-Ethyl 3-(Boc-amino)-2,2-difluoro-5-phenylpentanoate is a chiral compound that is reactive and has been shown to be mitochondrial membrane specific. (S)-Ethyl 3-(Boc-amino)-2,2-difluoro-5-phenylpentanoate inhibits the oxidative injury of cells by preventing depletion of the mitochondrial membrane potential. The drug also interacts with p-hydroxybenzoic acid and methyl transferase enzymes, which are involved in the redox cycle. This drug has been shown to inhibit carcinoma cell lines and model systems in experimental animal studies. The mechanism of this inhibition may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of acetate extract, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate into acetate.
