3-Sulfonyl-pyrazolo(1,5-A)pyrimidine is a potent inhibitor of ion channels that are selective for potassium and calcium. It is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of epilepsy and other diseases. 3-Sulfonyl-pyrazolo(1,5-A)pyrimidine binds to the extracellular domain of the potassium channel Kv1.2 with high affinity (Ki = 0.3 nM). This binding blocks the channel pore and prevents the passage of ions through it. The inhibition is reversible, which means that 3-sulfonyl-pyrazolo(1,5-A)pyrimidine can be removed from the channel by adding external potassium ions or calcium ions. This compound also inhibits voltage gated calcium channels in a similar manner as it does for potassium channels.
