<p>Diethyl ketomalonate is an organic compound that is a derivative of malonic acid. It is used as a potent and selective inhibitor of the enzyme protease. Diethyl ketomalonate has been shown to inhibit the activity of a wide range of enzymes, including aminopeptidases, carboxypeptidases, dipeptidases, endopeptidases, esterases, glycosidases, lipase, metalloprotease, peptidase A1, peptidase A2, peptidase M1 and urease. The mechanism of action for this class of compounds involves the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond between diethyl ketomalonate and a hydroxyl group in the enzyme's active site. This inhibits catalysis by blocking access to the substrate-binding site.</p>
