CAS:Benzyl mercaptan is a thiol that is used in analytical chemistry as a fluorescence probe. It has been used to detect and quantify the presence of other thiols, such as cysteine, glutathione, and homocysteine. Benzyl Mercaptan has also been used in the study of conformational properties of proteins and peptides. This compound reacts with the isothiouronium salt in an intramolecular hydrogen transfer reaction that leads to the formation of benzyl sulfide, which then undergoes a trifluoroacetic acid-catalyzed reaction to form benzyl disulfide. The resulting benzyl disulfide molecule can be detected using UV/VIS spectroscopy or by using a fluorescence probe.
