Descrição:
A substância química conhecida como Benzeno, 1,1'-metilenobis[4-isocianato-, comumente referida como MDI (Diisocianato de Metileno Difenílico), é um isocianato aromático usado principalmente na produção de espumas e revestimentos de poliuretano. É caracterizada por sua alta reatividade devido à presença de grupos funcionais isocianato, que reagem prontamente com compostos que contêm átomos de hidrogênio ativos, como álcoois e aminas. O MDI é tipicamente um líquido viscoso ou sólido à temperatura ambiente, com um odor aromático distinto. É insolúvel em água, mas solúvel em solventes orgânicos como acetona e tolueno. O MDI é conhecido por sua excelente estabilidade térmica e propriedades mecânicas, tornando-o adequado para várias aplicações industriais, incluindo materiais de isolamento e elastômeros. No entanto, também está associado a riscos à saúde, pois a exposição pode levar a problemas respiratórios e sensibilização da pele, exigindo manuseio adequado e precauções de segurança em ambientes industriais.

It can be found in polyurethane foam insulation and in the production of diphenyl and diisocyanate. MDI has been shown to cause asthma, skin inflammation, and other respiratory problems. MDI is highly toxic to aquatic life and can cause long term effects on fish populations. The toxicity of MDI depends on the concentration and duration of exposure, as well as the species that it is administered to. High concentration exposure for a short period of time will result in death by respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.
