3,3,3-Trichloro-2-oxopropanoic acid is a photochemical agent that has been used in the synthesis of sulfonamides. It is produced by the reaction of pyruvic acid with sulfuryl chloride or by the reaction of chloroacetic acid with ammonium chloride. The product can be converted to an amine or dichloride using piperidine or chlorine respectively. 3,3,3-Trichloro-2-oxopropanoic acid can also be synthesized from hydroperoxides and amines.
