Tereftalato de dimetilo (DMT) é um composto orgânico com a fórmula química C10H10O4, comumente usado como intermediário na produção de poliésteres, particularmente tereftalato de polietileno (PET). Aparece como um sólido cristalino incolor com um leve odor adocicado. O DMT é solúvel em solventes orgânicos como etanol e acetona, mas tem solubilidade limitada em água. Dimethyl terephthalate is a glycol ester that has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of both esterases and lipases, which can be used for wastewater treatment. This compound is also resistant to oxidation by catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide. The dimethyl terephthalate molecule is made up of two methyl groups (CH3) and two ethyl groups (C2H5) attached to a central carbon atom with four bonds. Dimethyl terephthalate is produced by reacting ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid in an esterification reaction. The addition of a catalyst can lead to an increase in the rate of this reaction. Methyl ethyl terephalate, an ester formed from the reaction between methyl alcohol and terephtalic acid, has been shown to produce high levels of ethanol and CO emissions when heated at high temperatures.
