Hidróxido de sódio, comumente conhecido como soda cáustica ou lixívia, é um composto inorgânico com a fórmula NaOH. É um sólido branco e inodoro que é altamente solúvel em água, produzindo uma solução fortemente alcalina. Hidróxido de sódio é higroscópico, o que significa que pode absorver umidade do ar, e geralmente é encontrado na forma sólida como pellets, flocos ou grânulos. Tem um alto ponto de fusão e é uma base forte, dissociando-se prontamente em água para liberar íons hidróxido (OH⁻), o que o torna eficaz na neutralização de ácidos. Este composto é amplamente utilizado em várias indústrias, incluindo fabricação química, produção de papel e tratamento de água, bem como em produtos de limpeza doméstica. Devido à sua natureza cáustica, Hidróxido de sódio pode causar queimaduras químicas severas e deve ser manuseado com cuidado, utilizando o equipamento de proteção individual apropriado. Também é importante notar que Hidróxido de sódio reage exotermicamente com a água, portanto, deve sempre ser adicionado à água, e não o contrário, para evitar respingos e potenciais perigos.
