Fenoterol é um agonista seletivo dos receptores adrenérgicos beta-2, utilizado principalmente como broncodilatador no tratamento da asma e da doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC). Funciona estimulando os receptores adrenérgicos beta-2 no músculo liso das vias aéreas, levando ao relaxamento e dilatação dos passagens brônquicas, melhorando assim o fluxo de ar. Fenoterol é tipicamente administrado por inalação, permitindo uma entrega direcionada aos pulmões com efeitos colaterais sistêmicos reduzidos. A substância é caracterizada por seu início de ação relativamente rápido e uma duração que pode variar dependendo da formulação. Além de seus efeitos broncodilatadores, Fenoterol também pode apresentar algumas propriedades anti-inflamatórias. Fenoterol is a bronchodilator that is used to treat asthma. It has been shown to inhibit the contractility of the papillary muscle and cause relaxation of the airways by acting on beta-adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle. Fenoterol is an experimental drug that may have a role in treating congestive heart failure. In a model system using dextran sulfate, fenoterol was found to inhibit polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity, which is important for DNA replication and repair. The cardiac effects of fenoterol are attributed to its ability to inhibit PCRs and thereby prevent DNA replication. The efficacy of this drug has been demonstrated in an animal study using untreated rats as a control group.
