Racemic 3-phenylcyclobutanol is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH(CH)CH(OH)CH. It is a white solid that is soluble in water, but insoluble in ethanol and ether. Racemic 3-phenylcyclobutanol can be synthesized by the ring-opening of cinnamyl chloride with potassium hydroxide. This reaction produces a mixture of stereoisomers, which are separated by fractional crystallization. The product obtained consists primarily of the erythro diastereomer, but also contains significant quantities of the threo diastereomer and traces of the dithreo diastereomer.
