BYK 49187 is an experimental drug that has been shown to have the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth in vitro. The compound was found to be effective against a number of different types of cancer cells, including kidney, colorectal, prostate and breast cancers. BYK 49187 binds to adenosine diphosphate-ribose (ADPR) and inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by blocking the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. This process prevents cancer cells from dividing or repairing DNA damage. In addition, the drug has been shown to suppress cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure in anesthetized rats.
BYK 49187 is not yet approved for use in humans.
