Methyl 2-(cyclopentylamino)acetate (CPA) is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed by esterases or glucuronidases to form the active drug cyclopentenylglycine. CPA has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases and aggrecanase, which are enzymes that degrade cartilage collagen. Methyl 2-(cyclopentylamino)acetate has been shown to have analgesic properties in rats, but also has cardiac effects.
