Morantel tartrate hydrate is metabolized by the target tissue, which is mainly the liver. Morantel tartrate hydrate inhibits acetylcholine release from cholinergic nerve endings and prevents binding of acetylcholine to its receptor at the synapse. The drug also inhibits muscle contractions in parasites. The efficacy of morantel tartrate hydrate in vivo has been shown using an experimental infection model in rats. The drug has a high resistance to oxidation by carbon disulphide and acetylcholine esterase due to its chemical structure and molecular weight.
