Cerebrosides are a group of natural and synthetic phospholipids that are found in the brain. They are made from glycerophosphoric acid and sphingosine. Cerebrosides have been shown to be anticancer agents, and may also inhibit the growth of bacteria. They can also promote DNA synthesis and prevent the destruction of DNA by inhibiting some enzymes, such as phosphodiesterase. Cerebrosides are also used to synthesize nucleosides and deoxyribonucleosides, which is important for cell division.
