Protheobromine is a molecule that is found in cocoa, tea, and the leaves of the cacao tree. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on bowel disease and cardiac hypertrophy. Protheobromine blocks the production of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, cytokines, and leukotrienes by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenase (LOX), and 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP). Protheobromine also inhibits angiotensin II receptors in cardiac tissue. This inhibition leads to an increase in insulin sensitivity. Protheobromine does not affect blood pressure or heart rate.
